WASHINGTON – Last week, a coalition of 39 labor unions responded to the Trump Administration’s proposed changes to dozens of federal safety rules and regulations. The responses, submitted by the AFL-CIO’s Transportation Trades Department (TTD) on behalf of the 39 member unions, highlighted how the Trump Administration’s deregulatory proposals at the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) will weaken safety standards for transportation workers, systems, passengers, and the public.
The American Prospect reported that on August 13, 2025, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) officially disbanded all its advisory committees—including the Railroad Safety Advisory Committee (RSAC)—citing a need for “a refresh” and critiquing members’ focus on DEI and climate issues The American Prospect.
On September 11, 2025, the 809 members of BRS Locals 56 and 241 working for Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike as a result of the ongoing contract dispute.
AUGUST 26, 2025, FRONT ROYAL, VIRGINIA – The Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS) has reached a tentative national agreement with the freight railroads. The agreement is subject to membership ratification.
Key provisions of the tentative agreement include:
General wage increases totaling 18.8% over five years.
On July 31, members of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee considered the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS) appropriations legislation, which provides funding for the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), the National Mediation Board (NMB), and the Department of Labor (DOL).
